David was born in Newham and is the eldest of seven brothers. Gaining five GCSEs at school, his future seemed bright with a college place on offer. However his life quickly went in the wrong direction. He became involved in crime, which eventually led to his imprisonment.
He made a decision while in prison that he would not return to his previous lifestyle, and enrolled on courses in painting and decorating. He studied hard and gained the qualifications needed to begin a new career.
Determined to succeed
Upon release however, he found he faced constant rejection for permanent work due to his criminal record. Five years on David was still unemployed and was caught driving without insurance. Sentenced to community service, David was back in the criminal justice system.
He was almost back to square one when his probation officer put him in touch with Be Onsite. He attended a selection event in Newham but was not chosen on that occasion. Undeterred, David demonstrated his tenacity, keeping in touch with us and later reapplying successfully.
“Be Onsite has helped me find out who I am and what I want to be. It has taught me to persevere and never give up. I now have the chance to show others that it is possible to change your life.”
Having worked with Be Onsite since 2009, David has studied for and completed two NVQ Level 2 courses in structural concrete and in formwork. David now lives in his own house, supports his family and is fully integrated into society.
